silence is the medium

Ruth Whippman’s short article (on page 22 of the August 8th issue of Time Magazine) on “Women’s empowerment” was eye-opening. In her write up, Time mentions she has a book coming out October 4th entitled How Our Pursuit of Happiness Is Creating a Nation of Nervous Wrecks.

I know a little about the subject of pursuing happiness. She is right. It’s the pursuit that’s the culprit.

Here’s the deal, most psychology professionals will agree that when we pursue something we have to have, the pursued tends to be harder to catch. So, to obtain it, somehow we must get to the point where it doesn’t matter whether we have it or not.

This is the point where many professionals may part company. The ancients say a deep-down satisfaction cannot be found, it finds you. So here’s where the “somehow” comes in. How can this happen? The ancients say satisfaction is residing inside of us, and when we do helpful things for ourselves and others, happiness or satisfaction will happen. What could happen to influence us to be more helpful?

The ancients say the top most respectable thing we can do is to honor and be truly grateful for our own human animal.

They say our happiness is not out in the world around us; it’s in our animal, and we can commune with it and do it on a regular basis as you would commune with a loved one.

Silence is the medium.

Our animal is our all. Our appreciation of our being’s skills, talent and awareness is key.

Our animal keeps us safe in a pattern in its brain. [I don’t know if the ancients would agree with that statement.] And long ago, our animals put you an me in charge of their care about the time we learned to respond to our names.

So, how does this communing work? We use the animal’s awareness. Classical meditation (using a mantra and correct posture) helps at this point and allows us to drop our language habit for longer and longer periods and in different circumstances.

When there are no thoughts, you and I do not exist and our animal responds to this recognition of its total underpinning of our existence. Awareness or sleep happens. We need to practice being in the moment until we no longer need to practice it.

When we are in regular touch with our animal, our being, it can give us a continuous deep satisfaction even when we experience sad or hurtful situations. Happiness is something else and happens in a wide spectrum from joy at an enemy’s death to giving birth to a normal and healthy baby.

Deep satisfaction happens and is available if we don’t have to have it.

Meditation without expectation.

Functional Art

What is it about functional art? As a model, let’s use

fa poonvoralak’s model entitled…

                A MODEL OF FUNCTIONAL ART

fa was born VICHIEN POONVORALAK 16 MAY 1963, in BANGKOK, THAILAND and later changed his first name. He had written many books of poetry and in 1989, he wrote A Book of Ordinary Writings. [The title may have been putting across the point this book was not poetry.

He says this about it…]

“For this book, I am publishing 25,000 copies and have chosen a whole set as my target. I am posting them to all the publishers in the USA, from alphabet a to z, including numerous unlikely candidates [I’m sure that’s how I got his packet of books] to create a complete field which, although it is simple and always stands in front of us, and usually escapes from our touch by our own cleverness and selections.

“The operation itself is as important as the writings and should be considered an integral part of my work. It  would be nice if there were an offer from a publisher. But it is still fine if there is none; because the operation is complete.”

[In the packet of small books I received, he states publishers and anyone else can use, copy, and publish any of the writing in the packet with or without permission by him or remuneration to him. Below is his functional art book. Republished here July16, 2016, by questionsnow.wordpress.com]

A Model of Functional Art      2 February 1990

I am going to define a new form of art which I will call Functional Art.

This art will perform like a program, once it has been started, it will work continuous until it is turned off.

It will work like a function.

There can be infinitely many models of functional art. I am going to build up just one of them.

The idea of my model is this

I will propose to a government to declare a law that in front of the formal name of each person we are going to add a word: Relation.

As examples

Mr William Shakespeare

Mr Albert Einstein

In this model will become

Relation William Shakespeare

Relation Albert Einstein

Relation WD Rubinstein

Relation Hans Robert Hansen

Relation Felix Perez Martinez

Relation Martin Luther

[etc. etc. etc.

etc. etc.

etc.

7 billion + times]

As an example, Relation John Brown.

His friends just call him John or Johnny.

Only in formal settings do they call him Mr John Brown. With the change, on this same type of occasion everyone would address him formally as

Relation John Brown

So what humankind loses is just simply a set of non-essential words like Mr, Mrs, etc. But what we gain is beyond imagination.

The whole structure of humankind will be transformed by one single word.

A functional art is like life, once it is born, it will move and grow up by itself.

The model will become a field of energy which will force humankind into a new form.

A basic idea of functional art is how can we transform an object which is infinitely large by using just one little finger.

The model will treat humankind like a single point; push and pull it as if it is a small worm.

Yet it will reserve all of the positive characteristics of humans. For example, love, friendship, sympathy, etc. without having to teach them.

You can try sub-models by using other words than relation. For my part I think relation is appropriate because relation is a kind of function and is not without love and friendship.

I choose the weak word relation. There are stronger words, but they cannot serve humanity.

The most important property of the model is this…

numerous unsolved problems of humankind, in each field, will be solved without having to solve them because they are nonexistent in the model.

My model is also a direct answer to the following questions.

It is a well know fact the earth is round, but can we feel the roundness of the earth?

Relativity is a well-known knowledge, but can we feel the relativity in everyday life?

You know that Mr A who is standing in front of you is a human being, but can you feel he is a human being?

Or you can put all of those questions into a generalized form: You know that it is x, but can you feel it is x?

I can see no way out, as long as we live in the present model of humankind, unless we have a change of the model.

Of course, one cannot see the result of my model in a short space of time. It will take a few decades for a new generation to be completely aware that one is a relation and all the others are relations.

For a new generation to be completely aware that one is an operation and all the others are operations, one may be unique or one may not.

Today one is aware that one is a human being.

It probably takes millions of years for a life to be aware of itself as a life.

It probably takes hundreds of thousands of years for a human being to be aware of itself as a human being.

How long will it take for a function to be aware of itself as a function?

Some readers probably still have not understood the extent of the model. It is not just simply a substitution of words.

Although, it is so in the beginning.

As consequences:

The word relation will appear in designs everywhere, education, buildings, agriculture, politics, industry, etc.

Why? Because everyone is a relation. From now on, a murderer is a relation, a prostitute is a relation, a postman is a relation, a student is a relation, etc.

It is like playing a game, but this is not a trivial game.

Someone may come up with a better model, or even a better sub-model of my model, and that means one can find a more efficient word than relation.

I admit that my model is just a primitive prototype.

But the value of my words lies in the concept of functional art in the method of building up one model of it.

[This is the end of the book.]

I (Marvin) would give the model a new twist.

I say, let’s change the model so we don’t have to beg politicians to pass a law requiring one to put Relation before formal names. It would take forever and it’s not necessary.

When anyone wants to place the word Relation before formal names, go ahead and do it. There’s no law against it. Today, we have the global web to propagate the usage of such a wonderful practice. All we have to do is to use and propagate the idea, and folks will see for themselves.

Like fa said, the model will keep on keeping on until it’s turned off, and what earth and its creatures have to gain is beyond imagination. Facing the fact we all are related, at the minimum of cousins all.

If you would like to write to fa, this is the address he gave in the packet of books I received twenty something years ago. He may still be there.

our own guru

(Science and the sages agree about most of what follows.)

Can a person who doesn’t believe in a god or gods have a spiritual life? Yes, I think so. So, where does a person look for spiritual comfort and release?

The ancient sages assure us we are fully equipped to function as our own guru. All we need is valid information and then following it.

Where is the information which might help us understand and find the most direct path to commune with the universe? Our beings have the complete set of senses we identities use to exist and to run our lives. We owe everything to our bodies: the human animal whose intelligence we desire to claim as our personal product.

The being’s able brain created our identity

(Our “I” is a pattern in the brain which responds to its adopted name and thinks itself real. It is real, it’s a real pattern in the brain running on energy supplied by our human animal. It’s highly probable the identity doesn’t take up space just as thoughts don’t take up space and some thoughts like “My name is _______ .” live on as patterns, as memory.)

to fit in with other humans, and while very young, we become hardwired into language because it was the best tool around we didn’t already have.

Our beings are usually trapped in language for decades before some of us begin to look for a better way to experience life via a personal spiritual dimension or a “church” with only one member. The sages assure us…

Meditation is the best tool to use to aid in controlling the habitual language use by one’s brain. Meditation is capable of giving one the feeling of all of a sudden looking over the edge of the Grand Canyon for the first time.

Change is accomplished by not fearing the loss of total control by allowing periods of no-thought to happen daily.

Resting the mind, eating for health, and exercising daily eventually sets our body’s chemical structure on its best setting, which is to say, one has less stress and may be able to lay waste to old prejudices with fresh points of view jumping up out of nowhere.

Meditation over time keeps one’s identity and one’s being moving in a positive and fulfilling direction. After meditation is an everyday thing, it can become an all-day thing and with it a warm feeling of belonging extending to edge of the universe.

Nothing is separate? Doing is everything?

Is the battle in life which counts the most the battle with our own selves? “I’m so busy, it’ll be OK to skip meditation because tomorrow I’ll be back on track.”

How does one stop battling?
By not attempting
to be perfect?
It’s OK
to
live a
day without
meditating! Do we promote the
perfection ideal
because
it’s able to
keep the ID alive
and existing in a language world?

The Future

One scare might be the gap between the haves and have nots would keep getting larger because of the tech revolution. Everyone should have a solid base education (through college if needed or wanted) in order to be able to determine one’s own destiny in this new age.

An education teaching life skills like Technology, Language, Finance, Reading, Creating (writing, etc.), Health, Philosophy, and Psychology. Math and Science could be electives.

no longer trapped

The masters of the past put
a lot of emphasis
on simply

observing
things with
an alert awareness.

They say observation without
judgment changes the
body’s chemistry
and energy in
a positive
direction.

Why
and How?
We are no longer
trapped in language.
“Just watching” is an ability
which comes about from a daily meditation practice.

Meditation provides a way to be fully aware.
This happens when we experience
moments without listening to
or using language

which
meditation
allows to happen.

How can we improve the
quality of life on
our planet?

We need to

find and install cleaner technologies and more
and more energy sources which are renewable and nonpolluting
(sun, waves, wind, thermal, gravity, and maybe fusion)

get better information about health by promoting more research into what can keep us and our surroundings healthy
(based on past performance, we can’t depend on our government to get it right because special interests spoil the process, so, each of us needs to find our own path to health)

find out how to provide ourselves with better governance
(take the money out of politics)

find better and better ways to eliminate poverty
(starting now, make sure everyone gets a high-quality education and let the top-tier rich pay for it because they will receive a huge financial benefit down the road and will be able to reminisce about how they saved the country), and…

Today, we
humans are
polluting the air
we breathe, the water
we drink, and the food we eat.

What needs to be changed? We need the United Nations to strictly enforce antipollution laws and complete its goal of spreading basic human rights throughout the world. Our UN needs to get some backbone and fly right. It needs to be a better tool for humanity.

Is the UN a start in the right direction? Does the world need a president and a congress with the presidents of countries becoming governors of their countries?

With everyone having the right to vote in a world with police but no soldiers and no weapons of war. It wouldn’t be a utopia but there’d be a lot less suffering in the world which would probably produce more happiness, contentment, and security.

This is a dream of many folks, and sometimes dreams come true. When? Will it be now or during the next generation, or will it happen when it’s too late?

We are all
in the same pot,
so, shouldn’t we admit it
and
forgive old wounds for the sake of the future?

Will we be able to stop poisoning ourselves and the life around us? Otherwise our home could slowly degrade to the point all life will be choked out except bacteria.

If bacteria survive, they would be the parents of earth’s second generation which might turn into a nightmare because of the pollution left by the first generation.

i dream therefore i am

Below is my attempt to introduce some of the greatest insights ever dreamed, and they suggest there’s another mindset available to us, and as the mindset sets in, the sages say a person becomes harder and harder to offend.

Indian sages have described reality as having three parts:

The main reality is the world of truth. Truth is everything existing. Us too. All is truth. Only truth can exist. When a lie is told, it will always be true a lie was told. Situations cannot be any other way.

The next part of reality is non-truth. It is composed of nothingness: the total nonexistence of physical things, non-truth = non-being, non-existing

The last part of reality is dreaming and is called maya. The dictionary definition of maya is “the illusion or the appearance of the phenomenal world” which is to say dreaming is the illusion or the appearance of the world which comes about when we experience our surroundings via our senses.

Maya has no real existence because it’s not physical, but it’s also truth in a way because the dreaming actually happened. Maya is a combination of the first two parts of existence: the real and the not real together at the same time.

Why think about maya? We dwell on maya in order to realize we dream even when we are awake. The brain is full of maya and produces it automatically. Maya is the state between being and non-being developed by the brain.

Our minds interpret what we sense, so what we get is secondary and not primary. The primary is reality itself. And between the primary and the secondary the sages say a dream is formed. (The dream might be of having a better wife or wanting a more caring husband or thinking about a friend who’s a real friend or thinking of friend who might be an enemy or the dream of having a new car, etc., etc.) Dreams aren’t real but they have happened and are happening.

All of this means dreams don’t last but atoms do. The search for fulfillment could be called Let’s get to know the Atoms. Since dreaming keeps one’s identity in place, I dream therefore I am. By daily interrupting the unbroken dreaming habit, one can come to know truth.

What advice, if any, would you expect here? If you are searching for that something extra in life, start meditating

(classical meditation: relax by sitting comfortably with eyes closed and repeating a mantra and/or relax by sitting comfortably with eyes closed and paying attention to the breath)

and read what the sages have left for us. Do these things (daily is best) and you may experience being an actual part of the Universe knowing for sure you are not separate and knowing you belong.

Don’t rush because you are able to rush. The trip is the thing. Become constant with the philosophy “easy does it.” Life’s greatest adventure is not a dash for the finish line. Not having to complete life’s greatest adventure will bring it within reach. So be cool.

If you don’t know where to start, I recommend Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind (Informal talks on Zen meditation and practice) by Shunryu Suzuki. Also, the recorded conversations (in book form) of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh are excellent regardless of the mess he got into here in the U.S.
